Deportivo La Coruna VS Cordoba - Match Preview
Deportivo La Coruna sit three points off leaders Racing Santander with the season entering its decisive stretch. A home fixture against a Cordoba side in freefall looks, on paper, like the kind of game that separates genuine promotion contenders from pretenders. Depor cannot afford to look past this one — not with Almeria and Malaga breathing down their necks on 55 points apiece, and Burgos lurking just three points back in fifth.
Depor's Promotion Push Without Their Star
The loss of David Mella to season-ending knee surgery on March 18 has reshaped Antonio Hidalgo's plans. Mella, who contributed five goals and an assist across 24 appearances, underwent a successful operation on his lateral external ligament in Madrid, but he won't kick another ball this campaign. That's a significant creative outlet removed from the left side, and it places even more responsibility on the shoulders of Peke, whose 10 goals and seven assists make him comfortably Depor's most decisive player this season.
The weekend draw at Sporting Gijon — where Dani Barcia rescued a point with an 81st-minute header after falling behind to Juan Otero's early strike — was typical of Deportivo's slightly uneven recent form. Their DWWLW run is solid but not imperious, and that home record of 7W 4D 4L doesn't exactly scream fortress. Four defeats at Riazor this season is more than you'd expect from genuine title challengers. Still, the underlying numbers favour them heavily here: the model gives them a 57.8% probability of victory, and the attacking firepower through Peke, Z. Eddahchouri (9 goals, 3 assists), and Mario Soriano (4 goals, 7 assists) should be too much for a porous Córdoba defence.
One factor that could prove decisive is timing. Deportivo's peak scoring window comes in the 76-90 minute bracket, where they've netted 13 goals this season. They're a side that grows into matches, applies late pressure, and finds openings when opponents tire. Against a Córdoba team whose confidence is shattered, that late-game surge could be devastating.
Córdoba's Collapse — From Safety to the Edge
Córdoba's form line reads DLLLL. Four consecutive defeats have sent what looked like a comfortable mid-table campaign spiralling toward anxiety. They sit 13th on 42 points — still 14 clear of the bottom three — but the direction of travel is alarming. Coach Iván Ania watched his side surrender a two-goal lead at home to bottom-half Mirandes last time out, drawing 2-2 in a result that summed up their current psychological fragility.
The defensive issues are stark. Córdoba have conceded 49 goals in 32 games — a negative goal difference of six — and their vulnerability in the 16-30 minute window (13 goals conceded) suggests they struggle to settle after the opening exchanges. Away from El Arcángel, the picture darkens further: 26 goals conceded in 16 road games, with just five wins. Fuentes remains their main threat with 10 goals and two assists, and Jacobo González chips in with seven, but this is a side that has lost its way collectively. The creative burden falls heavily on Cristian Carracedo, whose nine assists lead the squad, but even he cannot compensate for the structural issues that have plagued Córdoba's recent outings.
Interestingly, Córdoba's one strength may be the early minutes — they've scored 11 goals in the 0-15 minute window, more than any other period. If they can land an early blow and force Deportivo to chase, a different type of match could develop. But the head-to-head record, heavy with draws (five of eight meetings), suggests these two tend toward cagey, low-scoring affairs where the first goal arrives late — minute 46 on average.
The Verdict
The Segunda División title race demands three points here. Racing Santander stumbled at Zaragoza last weekend (a 2-0 defeat), giving Depor a lifeline — but only if they capitalise on it. With Almeria dismantling Real Sociedad II 5-1, the pressure on Hidalgo's men is real and immediate.
Depor's home advantage, superior squad depth, and the sheer desperation of their promotion bid should prove enough against a Córdoba side that has forgotten how to win. The head-to-head pattern of tight, draw-heavy games gives some pause — 27.4% draw probability feels about right given the historical trend — but Córdoba's four-game losing streak and defensive fragility tip the balance. Expect Deportivo to struggle for fluency early, grow into the second half, and find a decisive goal in the final quarter.
Prediction: Deportivo La Coruña 2-0 Córdoba. Peke pulls the strings, Eddahchouri gets on the scoresheet, and Depor keep the pressure on Racing at the top of the table.
