AZ Alkmaar VS Fortuna Sittard - Match Preview
AZ Alkmaar and Fortuna Sittard have met 14 times in recent Eredivisie history, and the ledger tells a brutal story for the visitors: ten wins for AZ, just two for Fortuna, with 29 goals scored and only 11 conceded. That kind of dominance doesn't happen by accident. AZ have historically controlled these fixtures with 58.9% average possession and nearly five more shots per game. But here's the twist — the reverse fixture in December blew that narrative apart.
The Reverse Fixture Changes the Dynamic
At Fortuna Sittard Stadion on December 21st, the home side pulled off a stunning 4-3 win despite holding just 34% possession. Kaj Sierhuis scored twice, Justin Lonwijk opened the scoring after nine minutes, and Philip Brittijn sealed it with a late 86th-minute goal. AZ had their moments — Troy Parrott and Sven Mijnans struck within two minutes of each other to briefly level things — but Sven Mijnans then missed a penalty in the 51st minute that could have turned the match entirely. That game exposed AZ's vulnerability against direct, counter-attacking opponents who don't need the ball to be dangerous.
The question now is whether Fortuna can reproduce that blueprint at the AFAS Stadion. History says no. AZ's home record of 6W 5D 2L this season is solid, and in the broader head-to-head, AZ at home have been a different beast entirely. The psychological edge clearly belongs to the hosts, who average nearly two goals per game against Fortuna across all meetings.
Injury Blows Hit Fortuna Hardest
Fortuna's chances of replicating December's heroics take a massive hit with the reported absence of Mohamed Ihattaren. The mercurial midfielder has been Sittard's standout performer this season — 6 goals, 8 assists, a team-high 7.2 rating — and losing his creativity in the final third strips Fortuna of their primary attacking engine. Goalkeeper Mattijs Branderhorst (7.1 rating) is also reportedly out, and Justin Lonwijk — who scored the opener in the reverse fixture — is sidelined too. That's three of their best performers unavailable, with Lonwijk's four goals from 15 appearances a genuine loss up front.
AZ have their own absentees. Jordy Clasie (midfield metronome), Mateo Chávez, and Seiya Maikuma are all reportedly missing, but none carry the same weight as Fortuna's losses. The hosts still have Parrott — 13 goals this season and the most dangerous striker in this fixture — plus Mijnans (6G/5A) pulling the strings in the number 10 role. That attacking core is more than enough to punish a depleted Fortuna backline.
Form, Timing, and the Late-Game Factor
Both sides come into this off defeats. AZ were hammered 3-0 at Groningen, a result that stung but also broke a run of two consecutive wins. Fortuna fell 1-2 at home to Twente, continuing an inconsistent run that reads LWLWW over their last five. Neither team is in peak form, but AZ's broader season trajectory — sitting 6th on 42 points, seven clear of Fortuna in 11th — tells you which squad has the deeper quality.
One pattern that screams from the data: both teams are at their most dangerous and most vulnerable in the final 15 minutes. AZ have scored 11 goals between the 76th and 90th minutes, but they've also conceded 12 in that same window. Fortuna have conceded 11 late goals too. Expect a match that could look settled at 70 minutes and then ignite. The December thriller, where Brittijn's 86th-minute winner decided it, wasn't an anomaly — it was a product of how both teams are wired.
AZ's preferred 4-2-3-1 mirrors Fortuna's favoured setup, and that structural similarity worked in Fortuna's favour when they could sit deep and hit on transitions with Ihattaren's vision and Sierhuis's finishing. Without Ihattaren, that counter-attacking game plan loses its brain. Sierhuis (9 goals, 7.0 rating) will be isolated more often, and while Dimitrios Limnios (4 assists) offers width, he hasn't shown the ability to unlock defences the way Ihattaren can.
For AZ, Alexandre Penetra and Wouter Goes provide stability at the back — both rated 7.0 with over 2,000 minutes played — and they'll need to handle Sierhuis better than they did in December. Denso Kasius has been a revelation since arriving, with 2 goals and an assist from 11 appearances at a 7.3 rating, giving AZ an attacking threat from right-back that Fortuna's depleted squad will struggle to contain.
The 76.7% predicted probability for an AZ home win might seem generous, but strip away the December outlier and the head-to-head record is overwhelmingly one-sided. AZ at the AFAS Stadion, with a near-full-strength attack against a Fortuna side missing their three best players, should be too strong. A 2-0 or 3-1 scoreline feels right — AZ to control the game and likely add a late goal in their favourite scoring period.
